Returning for its second year, the UK Skateboarding Film Festival brings together some of the most creative filmmakers, artists and musicians connected by skateboarding culture, showcasing not only incredible skateboarding video culture, but all kinds of art and music from a diverse range of urban environments.
Starting with an indoor warehouse skate jam, with ramps provided by NiseSkateboards, alongside live graffiti and street art Demos, all set to primebeats and cuts selected by the founders of the Film Festival, the Culture Cuts Collective.
Once the sun goes down, the evening program of Skate Film Screenings is set to be seriously epic, with Videos from a wide range of Skate Crews such as Lovenskate, Herbal, Sore, Drawing Boards and Science. After the films don’t miss the live music performers headlined by UK Beatbox Champion Reeps One.
ABOUT REEPS ONE
Leave what you think about beatboxing at the door, Reeps One is a vocal force. If you are unfamiliar this walking, breathing sound system, he is the first to ever vocalise bass music in a way that has had producers and scientists alike scratching their heads and invariably dancing. Reeps is an acoustic instrument, a human that speaks electronic music and can stand up to the highest energy DJ’s in the world with a 45 minute solo set. By the end of 2010 he was playing alongside Foreign Beggars, had just finished a UK tour with the mighty Prodigy and won the UK Beatbox Championships twice in a row; all with a sound that truly made people dance, without a loop pedal in sight.
2012 was a year jam-packed with international shows including an Australian tour showcasing a new show with DJ QBert, a performance in New Zealand with Skism, Zomboy, Wilkinson and TC and an invite to perform at the prestigious SXSW Festival in Austin, Texas. He also graced the stages of a huge number of festivals including Outlook Festival, Croatia and Glastonbury, to name just a few. These shows are bursting with his eclectic repertoire of music from deep house and rolling hip-hop through to Jungle and Jazz, taking audiences on a diverse journey and providing something truly unique to a crowd.
Now with YouTube views in the multi-millions Reeps One has drawn the attention of those outside the conventional world of a beatboxer. He was recently invited by neurologists at UCL to have his brain scanned as part of a study on what changes in a person’s mind when they become an expert at their skill; these findings were then presented by Reeps and the team at the ICA in London. He was also invited by Steve Budd to participate in the ‘Africa Express’, a journey which took a collection of hand-picked musicians including Damon Albarn, Dead Prez and John Paul Jones of the Led Zepplins to six cities in six days.
Reeps has also recently begun combining his passion for visual arts with his music to produce a truly organic AV show using the science of cymatics, controlled by his voice. Audiences have already been awed by this unique interpretation of sound and 2013 will see a further exploration in the seemingly infinite possibilities of this science. 2013 also holds another tour with DJ QBert, collaborations with The Skints, Beardyman and Foreign Beggars, as well as a sit-down theatre production co-produced with Shlomo, ‘The Voice of Yeff’ which was shown at The Edinburgh Fringe.
